INTERVIEW

Mariam, tell us about your sources of inspiration. Where and how do you draw your ideas?

My sources of inspiration are deeply rooted in the rich cultural heritage of Africa and the daily practices and spiritual elements of Islamic culture. I draw ideas extensively from African traditions, particularly the symbolic motifs, intricate patterns, and bold colors that define the continent’s rich visual language. The rhythms, geometry, and symbolism of tribal art are constant influences, while contemporary design trends help me reimagine these ancient elements for modern audiences.

How does your cultural heritage reflect in your art? What themes do you work on?

My work is not just a reflection of my African background but a celebration of the vibrant, diverse cultures and Islamic teachings that have shaped me. These elements are reimagined in my work, where I seamlessly blend them with contemporary aesthetics, creating art that resonates with both past and present.
I often work on themes of identity (connecting people with the designs on their wearables), spirituality, and the intersection of tradition and modernity. My designs serve as visual narratives that tell the stories of African culture, seeking to preserve and promote these traditions in a modern context. Additionally, my work addresses themes of cultural connection and harmony, bridging African heritage with other global cultures to promote peace and understanding through art.

How did you come to work with textiles and start creating clothing, accessories, and more?

I’ve always had a passion for sewing, which began right after high school and led me to study Clothing and Textile Science in my undergraduate years. There, I was exposed to various aspects of fashion and textiles. After graduation, I facilitated skills in cloth-making and textile design. This experience deepened my fascination with how wearables connect with their wearers. Realizing the textile industry wasn’t reaching its full potential, I decided to pursue an MFA in Textile Design, driven by a desire to make a significant contribution to the field.

Tell us about the research you are working on. What is the essence of innovating and smart textiles?

I recently completed research exploring the synergy between traditional and digital technology in contemporary textile art. My findings have laid the groundwork for my next project: navigating 3D textile printing and design, particularly how these innovations can be applied to therapeutic medicine. This research is crucial because textiles, being so integral to human life, have the potential to make a profound impact across various fields. I believe there’s a vast, untapped potential in fibers, and through continuous research, we can unlock new possibilities for textiles to contribute positively to the world. Smart textiles, which integrate advanced materials and technology, are a key area of focus for me, as they represent the future of textiles in both functionality and innovation.

How do your work and education in design and textiles help you with your current projects? What are you working on now?

My background as a clothing and textile scientist, combined with my current studies in the art of textile design, uniquely positions me to approach my research projects with a comprehensive perspective. My projects often revolve around the intersection of textile science and technology with design aesthetics, focusing not just on the art of textiles but also on their functional and technological potential. This dual expertise allows me to view textiles and fibers from a streamlined, holistic approach, bridging the gap between science and design.

Having knowledge in both fields enables me to collaborate effectively with scientists and designers alike, aiming to harness the full potential of fibers to enhance human life. This interdisciplinary approach is central to my research, driving my passion to innovate and explore new possibilities in textiles that go beyond conventional applications.

Your work has also been showcased at exhibitions. Which event do you remember the most?

The exhibition that stands out the most for me is the SIUE Juried Exhibition during my first year as an MFA student. Being new to the United States and still finding my way, I was also new to the art world and didn’t expect my work to be selected. However, the juror saw something unique in my work that I hadn’t fully recognized myself. This experience was incredibly rewarding and motivating, proving to me that I could achieve anything I set my mind to.

What advice would you give to aspiring artists?

As an emerging artist and research scholar, my advice to aspiring artists is simple: pursue what you truly love, and the work will feel seamless, even when it gets challenging. Believe in yourself and your unique vision, and never underestimate the power of networking.

Keep learning and expanding your skillset, because knowledge will ultimately lead to success and opportunities.

Stay curious, stay committed, and trust that the money and recognition will follow.
