INTERVIEW

Matthew, what is your process for creating a collage? Do you follow a particular structure or allow intuition to guide you?

As an artist, my approach to creating a collage is a blend of both structure and intuition. I start with a rough concept or theme in mind, which gives me a foundation to build upon. However, once I begin selecting and arranging the elements, I allow my intuition to take over.

I collect various materialsā€”magazines, photographs, internet mems, and found objectsā€”each chosen for their hidden meaning, color, and the story they tell. As I lay these pieces out, I pay attention to how they interact with each other, letting the composition evolve naturally. It’s a dynamic process where initial plans might change as new connections and contrasts emerge.

The beauty of collage lies in its unpredictability and the layered narratives it can create. Each piece I make is a journey of discovery, both for me and for the viewer, inviting multiple interpretations and deeper engagement.

Your works reflect powerful themes of revolution and freedom. How do these concepts shape your approach to collage art?

My works delve deeply into the themes of revolution and freedom, shaping my approach to collage art in profound ways. These concepts ignite a passion within me to push boundaries and challenge societal norms through my art.

When creating a collage, I seek to capture the essence of upheaval and liberation. I use fragmented images, bold colors, and diverse textures to convey the intensity and complexity of revolutionary moments. This chaotic blend symbolizes the disruption of the old order and the birth of new possibilities.Freedom, to me, is about breaking away from constraints and embracing individuality. My collages often feature contrasting elements that interact dynamically, representing the tension and harmony found in the struggle for autonomy. Through this interplay, I aim to highlight the resilience and courage required to pursue true liberation.

Ultimately, my goal is to inspire viewers to reflect on their own perceptions of revolution and freedom, encouraging them to envision and strive for a more just and equitable world. My art serves as a visual manifesto, advocating for change and celebrating the human spirit’s unyielding quest for freedom.

Moving to Scotland due to the war in Ukraine must have been a major transition. How has this experience affected your artistic voice and perspective?

Yes, without a doubt, this event has left a deep scar in my heart, as it has for millions of my fellow citizens. It forced a re-evaluation of reality. However, I was extremely fortunate to find myself in the stunningly beautiful country of Scotland. Here, I became part of the Abandoned Artist Group. These are creative souls, cast into the unknown, far from the orderly lives they once knew. This forced relocation has expanded my artistic voice, adding an awareness of the fragility of our transient world amidst the chaos, in the unceasing quest of the human spirit for beauty and solace.

What drew you to NFT art, and how do you view the relationship between traditional art forms and the digital medium?

The NFT technology itself is unique and interesting. It is widely used in the gaming and media industries. But we all realise that the market itself is not regulated in any way. It is very similar to the dot-com bubble that existed from about 1995 to 2001. NFTs themselves are currently not backed by anything but the hype around them. It’s a simple assumption. Pyramid. After all, you can create a huge number of NFTs of the same type and sell them on various sites. And once they are sold, create just as many more and so on. I went much further….

What if the NFT is backed up by the artist’s reputation, a competent plan to protect customers from the price reduction of the NFTs themselves? What if 2D works that, over time, can be exchanged by an NFT collector? Or another option – NFT holders can get many other bonuses, such as an exclusive invitation to a private exhibition, an exclusive work by the artist. Receiving various exclusive merch (merchandise).

As you can see – the potential in this technology is enormous, which will definitely be used in the traditional art sphere.

With over forty exhibitions worldwide and numerous awards, which exhibition or achievement holds the most personal significance to you?

The exhibition that holds the most personal significance to me is my very first showcase in New York, titled “Innovation of Art” It marked the start of my professional journey and the unveiling of my artistic voice to the world. The overwhelming response and support I received from that debut have continued to inspire and shape my work ever since.

Reflecting on that pivotal moment, it’s clear that “Innovation of Art” was not just the start of my career but a catalyst for my artistic evolution. Each piece in that exhibition carried a piece of my soul, reflecting my innermost thoughts and emotions. The support and encouragement I received spurred me to push my boundaries and explore new dimensions of creativity. It was a transformative experience that solidified my belief in the power of art to connect, inspire, and evoke profound emotions. That first exhibition will forever hold a special place in my heart, symbolizing the dawn of my artistic odyssey.

How has the global recognition of your work influenced your career, and how do you stay grounded in your artistic vision despite external accolades?

Global recognition has been both a blessing and a responsibility. The acclaim has opened doors to incredible opportunities and collaborations, allowing my work to reach diverse audiences. However, it’s crucial for me to stay true to my artistic vision and the core messages I wish to convey.

I ground myself by continually revisiting the reasons I became an artist in the first placeā€”the desire to explore, express, and connect with others on a deep level. Regularly reflecting on my journey and the initial sparks of inspiration keeps me anchored. Additionally, engaging with fellow artists and immersing myself in different cultures and perspectives enriches my creative process and ensures that my art remains authentic and true to its origins.

What advice would you like to give to aspiring artists?

My advice to aspiring artists is to stay true to your vision and never be afraid to express your unique voice. The art world can be overwhelming with trends and external pressures, but your authenticity is your most powerful asset.

Embrace every experience, learn from every failure, and let your passion drive you forward.

Surround yourself with a supportive community, keep exploring, and remember that art is a journey, not a destination.
