Interview with Wiccatori

Posted as part of – Publication for Donation initiative.
We thank the artist for helping and supporting animals!

My art serves as an escape from routine and worries, transporting viewers to a fantasy world. By transcending familiar forms and situations, I aim to stimulate imagination and evoke a sense of emotional and physical connection with nature. Drawing brings me a state of harmony, and I strive for that feeling to permeate my paintings.

INTERVIEW

Why did you decide to take part in the initiative and apply? What does it mean to you to help animals?

I am a passionate admirer of all living creatures, especially those with fur and feathers. Animals provide endless joy and inspiration to me. I always carry a bag of cat food, and when I encounter a dog while enjoying a sandwich on the street, I never hesitate to share. Caring for animals is both a personal need and a desire for it to become the norm for humanity.

During a visit to Istanbul, I was moved by the presence of food and water bowls near every store or entrance. I dream of fostering a similar attitude towards animals in Kyiv. I am grateful for the charitable organizations that support and protect animals, as they rely heavily on us and the consequences of human actions.

Recently, I have been witnessing an incredible trend during the war, where people and companies offer their help, products, or services in exchange for donations. This stimulates our society to become more compassionate, engaged, and kind, and it deeply impresses me.

Your path in art began a long time ago. What do you think this base and education as an art designer and interior design courses gave?

The painting and drawing lessons I received before and during university provided a solid foundation of academic knowledge in the creative field. I gained an understanding of color, light, form, perspective, and anatomical structure. Additionally, my training in graphic design not only enhanced my ability to create something entirely new but also left a visible mark on my style. Vibrant tones and smoothness, with strokes barely visible, create a distinct “posterness.”

Moreover, my design education allowed me to delve into the emotional and associative aspects on a deeper level. Graphic designers study the psychology of color and form, exploring the associations evoked by different shades, poses, and compositions.

Tell us about your inspiration and where you get your characters from?

The inner world of individuals holds utmost significance in my work. I aim to unleash their ability to freely fantasize and create without being confined by rigid and mundane rules. Therefore, my paintings always feature anthropomorphic beings that embody the various manifestations and emotions of the inner child. Unconventional forms greatly inspire me, whether it’s observing uniquely hanging eyelids on a passerby, a distinct nose, or other facial features rarely found in glossy magazines. I find beauty in non-standard forms as they connect us to nature and evoke a sense of transformation.

Lately, I have begun to depart from a purely portrait style, incorporating movement and fluidity. Dance, acrobatics, and, to a lesser extent, yoga serve as my inspiration in this regard. Additionally, nature plays a significant role in my work.

The extraordinary diversity of life forms on our planet has always captivated me, and I strive to incorporate them into my compositions as much as possible.

Digital influence is felt in your style. It seems that the digital style has strongly influenced your works, or do you combine the thinking of a digital artist with a traditional approach?

My style took shape even before the widespread use of digital art, yet it possesses a distinct “cartoonishness.” Challenging traditional norms, rules, and standards that I found monotonous and limiting was my primary motivation. Since childhood, I resisted drawing in a conventional manner, adhering to what others dictated. However, over time, I discovered numerous advantages in academic painting. It teaches one to seek unusual shades, reflections, and the interplay of light, bringing both the artwork and its subjects to life. While I briefly experimented with digital art, working with paints continues to bring me immense joy.

Tell us about your future plans, what do you want to do in the near future?

My plans involve enriching my style by adding more intricate details and characters to my compositions. I aspire to create artwork that captivates viewers, compelling them to linger and discover increasingly fascinating elements within, akin to reading a fairy tale. For a time, I focused on a single central character, making them nearly the sole focus. However, my drive for growth and complexity has shifted my approach. I intend to increase my presence on social networks and participate in more exhibitions, extending my creativity beyond the confines of my studio. In the past, I would immerse myself completely in the creative process, akin to meditation, oblivious to the outside world. I find great pleasure in pursuing my goal of creating Art toys based on my characters. I have long been fascinated by this topic, and I consider collectible art forms to be integral to modern interior design. It provides a means to incorporate childhood elements into our adult lives in a “legitimate” way.

What advice would you give to beginners who are not sure where to start?

The path to becoming an artist can vary depending on one’s level of self-discipline and artistic direction. In today’s age, formal education at schools or universities is not necessarily a prerequisite. I have witnessed incredible, awe-inspiring works from self-taught artists. With perseverance, access to the internet, and guidance, one can learn anything.

If discipline is lacking, it is beneficial to create an environment that helps maintain focus. Studying with professionals, preferably those whose work resonates with you, can leave a lasting imprint on your style. Personally, I believe composition and the concept of color hold great importance in creativity, even for those pursuing abstraction. Believing in oneself is also crucial.

There will inevitably be fluctuations in moods and attitudes towards one’s work. For creative individuals, these fluctuations can resemble a rollercoaster ride. However, it is vital to recognize this as a natural part of the process, as development and growth continue to unfold.
